Ruim Verslag Triptyque Ardennais

De eerste dag van de Triptyque Ardennais beloofde een zware wedstrijd te worden. De afstand van de eerste etappe bedraagt 152km met daarin 1 rit in lijn van 125.8km en 2plaatselijke ronden van 13.1km. In deze rit moesten er 3 bekende hellingen betwist worden, waaronder de Signal de Botrange in de Hoge Venen, de Edelstraße te Eupen, een helling van maar liefst 12,5% gemiddeld over een afstand van 500meter, en een zware helling in de lokale ronde naar de finish toe. Al van bij de start zag het weer er niet goed uit. Regen die als bakken uit de hemel viel. Eenmaal het startschot gegeven was het alert blijven om slippartijen te vermijden. Ik probeerde mij elke keer goed vooraan te posten om niet in de problemen te komen. Er werd een hoog tempo opgelegd door het peloton waardoor er een scheur ontstond iets halfweg koers. Dit gebeurde iets voor de Signal De Botrange.
Hoe verder de koers vorderde, hoe minder renners er nog overbleven in het peloton. Bij het ingaan van de 2 plaatselijke ronden werd er een aanval geplaatst van een groep van 20 renners. Deze renners bleven een 40-tal seconden voor onze groep. In deze ontsnapping was er 1 renner van onze ploeg mee, Thimo was een spurter en ging ook zijn uiterste best doen om zo dicht mogelijk te eindigen. Hij werd mooi 7e van de kopgroep en in dezelfde tijd van de winnaar Marcel Meisen, dit is een cyclocrosser. Deze crossers bereiden zich hier voor op het cyclocrossseizoen. Ik finishte half onderkoeld in de 2e groep en verloor weinig seconden voor het algemene klassement.

Zaterdag 20 Mei :
De 2e dag was het weer ietsje beter dan dat van gisteren. Iedereen stond een beetje nerveus aan de start, vanaf wanneer het startschot gegeven was moesten we de Signal de Botrange al direct beklimmen. De start werd gegeven te Eupen en ging zo door de Hoge Venen naar het Duits grondgebied. De finish lag 156km verder in Bütgenbach. In Bütgenbach waren er nog 4 plaatselijke ronden van 9,4km. In deze rit werd het tempo gelijkmatig opgetrokken tot aan de finish. Op de Botrange vielen er 14 renners aan en ging ik me in de aanval voor de vroege vlucht op poten te zetten. Na 5km kreeg onze groep al snel 40seconden en konden wij onze vlucht al opbouwen tot maximaal een minuut. Na 70km werd onze vroege vlucht teniet gedaan, zo vormde er zich een compact peloton van om en bij de 90 renners. De 4plaatselijke ronden in Bütgenbach waren niet de makkelijkste, er waren maar liefst 3 beklimmingen in het parcours aan te pas, met als zwaarste beklimming de laatste kilometer die opliep tot aan de finish. Op 50km van de finish reed er een groep van om en bij de 25 renners weg met daarbij 4 ploegmaten. Ik was niet mee met de ontsnapping en probeerde om een manoeuvre te doen om er toch nog te kunnen bijkomen. Ik viel aan de 3e laatste ronde en probeerde met Gianni Vermeersch de voorsprong van 40seconden bijeen te fietsen. Na 20 kilometer ben ik samen met Gianni erbij gekomen en probeerde even te recupereren. Toen ik er bij kwam, gingen er een paar renners opnieuw in de aanval en was er weinig tijd om te recupereren. Ik probeerde mij constant vooraan post te vatten. Naarmate de finale dichterbij kwam, kreeg ik steeds een beter gevoel te pakken. Er waren 14 renners ontsnapt waaronder opnieuw mijn ploegmaat Thimo die mooi 4e werd. In de spurt van mijn groep van 25 renners werd ik mooi 5e van mijn groep, met in totaal een 19e plaats in de 2e etappe.

Zondag 21 Mei :
Deze etappe was de zwaarste rit op papier. De wedstrijd startte in het Knauf Shopping Center te Troisvierges en finishte in Lierneux. afstand bedroeg 152km met daarin 1 grote ronde van 119km en 3 plaatselijke ronden van 11,3km. Na de officieuze start werd de wedstrijd na 5km stilgelegd. Er was een accident gebeurd met 2 motards van de politie die op elkaar ingereden hebben en zo zware verwondingen hebben opgelopen. Er moet altijd een ziekenwagen inde wedstrijd aanwezig zijn, dus moest er een andere ziekenwagen van een ziekenhuis in de buurt vervangen worden. Dit nam een halfuur in beslag. Na een halfuur werd er een nieuw startschot gegeven. In deze rit moesten er 8 hellingen betwist worden. De eerste van de dag was de Côte de Mercadenes van 1e categorie. Dit was boven op de Baraque Fraiture. Een lange brede weg die in de open velden ligt en die licht oploopt. De zwaarste helling van de dag was de Côte du Mont des Brumes. Deze helling ligt dicht bij Trois-Ponts en is zowat de zwaarste helling van de streek. Op deze helling werd de koers wel hardgemaakt. Op de top van deze helling waren er maar 20 renners die samen als eerste boven kwamen. Ik was samen met ploegmaat Jacob mee in dit selectiegroepje en probeerde zoveel mogelijk te vermijden dat deze groep voorop reed om onze kopman terug te brengen. Thimo kwam terug aansluiten in de plaatselijke ronden. Deze plaatselijke ronden waren redelijk zwaar omdat er een stevig tempo werd opgelegd. Ik probeerde mijn ploegmaat te helpen om 1x fors bergop door te trekken om de 4koplopers niet te laten wegrijden, maar deze groep bleef uit de greep van het peloton met 14seconden. Ik spurtte naar een mooie 24e plaats van de 160 renners die in deze ronde zijn gestart. In het algemeen klassement werd ik 23e op een kleine minuut van de winnaar Gianni Marchand. Volgende week sta ik aan de start van waarschijnlijk één van de mooiste wedstrijden bij de beloften : Parijs-Roubaix.
